Pawtuxet Park stands as a cherished green space in the community, but like many parks, it faces challenges and opportunities that call for thoughtful planning. In 2023, the City of Warwick brought together park users, residents, community organizations, and City representatives to help shape a shared vision for the future of Pawtuxet Park. Building on feedback gathered during a public meeting hosted by the Pawtuxet Village Association in June 2021, participants reviewed design concepts, discussed park priorities, and provided input on a range of potential improvements.
The charrette explored key topics including recreation, accessibility, environmental stewardship, shoreline enhancement, gathering spaces, and park amenities. Participants reviewed concept boards and completed questionnaires to identify preferences, concerns, and opportunities for the park.
Community feedback collected during the event informed the development of the park's master plan and helped establish priorities for future improvements. The resulting vision continues to guide planning efforts and support future funding and implementation opportunities for Pawtuxet Park.

Key Topics Explored
Several important themes shaped the discussions during the charrette. Each topic reflects a critical aspect of what makes Pawtuxet Park a valuable community asset.
Recreation and Amenities
Participants expressed interest in enhancing recreational opportunities, included upgrading the playground equipment. There was also support for picnic areas and benches to encourage longer visits and family gatherings.
Accessibility for Everyone
Ensuring the park is accessible to people of all abilities was a clear priority. This means improving pathways to meet ADA standards, adding clear signage, and providing seating areas that accommodate different needs. Accessibility also extends to parking and entrances, making it easier for everyone to enjoy the park without barriers.
Environmental Stewardship and Shoreline Enhancement
Pawtuxet Park’s location near the water offers unique environmental opportunities and challenges. Participants discussed ways to protect and enhance the shoreline, such as planting native vegetation to prevent erosion and improve habitat for local wildlife.
Environmental stewardship also includes managing stormwater runoff and reducing pollution.
Gathering Spaces and Community Connection
The charrette highlighted the importance of designing spaces that foster community connection while respecting the park’s peaceful character.
Looking Ahead: What This Means for Pawtuxet Park
The design charrette was more than a one-time event. It represents a step toward ongoing community involvement and thoughtful stewardship. As improvements roll out, residents and park users can expect a park that feels more welcoming, functional, and environmentally sound.
